Purpose

The aim of this wiki is to present a summary of export file type options available in the Crystal Reports Designer (CRW32.EXE) as well as in a Visual Studio .NET (VS .NET) runtime applications.

Overview

Export file types vary depending on version of Crystal Reports and Crystal Reports Solution Developer Kit (SDK). Generally, stand-alone versions of the Crystal Reports designer provide the richest export environment. Versions of Crystal Reports which bundle with Visual Studio .NET will usually have the least export options. Additionally, there are two basic Crystal Reports SDKs for Visual Studio .NET; Viewer and Engine. The following versions of Crystal Reports are considered in this wiki:

CR 9.1 (VS .NET 2003 bundle)
CR 10.0.x
CR 10.2 (VS .NET 2005 bundle)
CR 10.5 (VS .NET 2008 bundle, also known as Crystal Reports Basic for Visual Studio 2008)
CR 11.0.x
CR 11.5.x
CR 12.x
CR 13.x (Crystal Reports for Visual Studio 2010, 2012, 2013)

Crystal Reports Stand-Alone Builds

Stand-alone builds of Crystal Reports Designer offer the richest file export environment. Similarly, the CR SDK for Visual Studio .NET of stand-alone versions is more featured than that of the Visual Studio bundles. For example, Crystal Reports 2008 designer is able to export to fifteen different file formats. The viewer SDK is able to export to eight file formats and the engine SDK can export to thirteen file formats:

The Table below summarizes stand-alone builds of Crystal Reports 10.x, 11.0.x (also known as CR XI R1), 11.5 (also known as CR XI R2 or CR XI R2A) and 12.x (also known as Crystal Reports 2008).

Crystal Reports for Visual Studio .NET bundles

Crystal Reports (CR) is included as a free add-on for Visual Studio 2003 (CR v. 9.1), Visual Studio 2005 (CR v. 10.2) and Visual Studio 2008 (CR v. 10.5). In addition, there is also Crystal Reports for Visual Studio 2010 which is discussed in more detail below in it's own section. As mentioned in the Overview section above, versions of Crystal Reports that bundle with Visual Studio .NET have the least export options. The table below summarizes all three Crystal Reports bundles.

Crystal Reports for Visual Studio

Crystal Reports for Visual Studio (CRVS) is the only version of Crystal Reports that supports Visual Studio 2010, 2012 (SP7) and 2013 (SP9). CRVS is neither a Visual Studio bundle, nor a stand-alone version of Crystal Reports. However, it can be downloaded free of charge and integrates into VS. For the download of CRVS see the SAP Crystal Reports, Version for Visual Studio .NET Landing Page. CRVS offers two significant improvements over all previous bundles for VS .NET;

1) The richness of the export file types rivals that of the full build of Crystal Reports 2008, SAP Crystal Reports 2011 and SAP Crystal Reports 2013 (export to XLSX is now supported).
2) The CR SDK for VS .NET, for the first time, offers the developer a choice of which formats he wants to display to the users in the Crystal Reports Viewer

For available file export types see the above table for Crystal Reports Stand-alone Builds. The code below that describes how to use the SDK to set the Viewer export options that the end user will see when running the final application.

C# code

int exportFormatFlags = (int)(CrystalDecisions.Shared.ViewerExportFormats.PdfFormat CrystalDecisions.Shared.ViewerExportFormats.ExcelFormat);
CrystalReportViewer1.AllowedExportFormats = exportFormatFlags;

VB code

Dim exportFormatFlags As Integer = CInt(CrystalDecisions.[Shared].ViewerExportFormats.PdfFormat Or CrystalDecisions.[Shared].ViewerExportFormats.ExcelFormat)
CrystalReportViewer1.AllowedExportFormats = exportFormatFlags

For more information on exporting when using CRVS2010, see the blog Export file formats for SAP Crystal Reports for VS 2010.

Symptom

When you click 'Verify the Database' on a report created in Crystal Reports version 8.5 that contains a subreport based on a stored procedure with parameters, the following error message appears:

'Prompting failed with the following error message: Error source : Error code 0x8000FFFF'.

The Same error message may also be displayed when viewing the report on demand with Crystal Reports Server XI R2 or Business Objects Enterprise XI R2.

The cause of the problem is that when a stored procedure with parameters is used in a subreport, the prompts are identified, but the prompt information fails to be collected and passed to the prompting engine.
